An Educational Project of Shir Shalom
Makom offers the Greater Rockland Jewish Community innovative curriculum to enrich and challenge students from Pre-K through Bar/Bat Mitzvah age.
Our program includes wonderful opportunities for family involvement in Jewish life. We work to stimulate and reinforce a positive lasting relationship between the student, the families, the synagogue, and the Jewish people.
When does Makom meet?
All grades meet Sunday mornings, with grades 3-7 additionally meeting on Tuesday afternoons.

Tell me about the curriculum.
The curriculum evolves through the years centered on Jewish prayer, Bible, holidays, mitzvot, customs and ceremonies. We work to develop basic Hebrew skills that aid the students in participating in synagogue worship services in a meaningful way. Our objective is to provide a foundation of concrete Jewish learning experiences which our students can build upon in their older years. Our aim is to instill a love for everything Jewish and to nurture our children’s own natural source of curiosity. We strive to kindle their desire to know who they are, where they belong and from whence they came. Along with the positive Jewish encounters of these years, we help students develop the skills and knowledge needed for meaningful and joyful Jewish living.
Each student is also evaluated based on their needs and abilities, and our unique Mentoring Program (see below) offers additional support and guidance. Small class sizes further provide more individualized attention.
Can I be a mentor?
We're so glad you asked! A few quick questions...
Can you read hebrew?
Are you comfortable with the Friday night and Saturday morning prayers?
Do you have some free time on Sunday mornings?
Is spending time and learning with children something you enjoy?
If you answered YES to the questions above, we'd love to have you! You'd be paired with a Makom student who we feel would benefit from supportive, one-to-one guidance on a weekly or semi-monthly basis.
If you're Interested in participating or have any questions, please reach out to the Shir Shalom office (office@shirshalomrockland.org or 845-708-9181).
We're an affiliated family - are there benefits?
Yes! Affiliated families are eligible for FREE Pre-K through 2nd Grade tuition.
My family isn't yet affiliated - how can I learn more?
If you are not familiar with our Shul or Religious School, we encourage you to visit us for a tour, and to meet our clergy, principal, and staff. Be sure to ask about our voluntary pledge structure which replaces traditional dues. Come be a part of our family. You are always welcome at our synagogue home.
